Frequently asked questions
What Is Adult Surf Therapy?
Adult surf therapy is a guided wellbeing activity that uses surfing and the ocean environment to support mental, emotional, and physical health. Sessions are led by trained instructors and facilitators, focusing on connection, confidence, and enjoyment rather than surfing ability.
No previous surfing experience is required.
Who Is Adult Surf Therapy For?
Adult surf therapy is suitable for people aged 18 and over who may be experiencing:
- Stress, anxiety, or low mood
- Burnout or emotional fatigue
- Social isolation or loneliness
- Caring responsibilities or high-pressure roles
- A desire to reconnect with nature and movement
Sessions are inclusive, supportive, and adapted to individual needs.
Do I Need Surfing Experience?
No. Many participants are complete beginners. Sessions are designed to be pressure-free, with plenty of encouragement and one-to-one support where needed. The focus is always on wellbeing rather than performance.
What Happens During a Surf Therapy Session?
A typical adult surf therapy session may include:
- A relaxed welcome and introduction
- Gentle warm-ups and breathing exercises
- Time in the water with adapted surf instruction
- Supportive guidance from instructors and volunteers
- Time to reflect, connect, and unwind
Everything is delivered at a pace that feels comfortable for you.
Is Adult Surf Therapy Safe?
Yes. Safety is always a top priority.
All surf therapy sessions are delivered by International Surfing Association (ISA) qualified surf instructors who also hold the Royal Life Saving Society (RLSS) Beach Lifeguard qualification.
Comprehensive risk assessments are carried out for every session, and all equipment — including wetsuits and soft-top surfboards — is provided. Participants are supported both in and out of the water, and no one is ever pushed beyond their comfort zone.
What Are the Benefits of Adult Surf Therapy?
Participants often report:
- Reduced stress and anxiety
- Improved mood and emotional resilience
- Increased confidence and self-belief
- A stronger connection to nature
- Feeling part of a welcoming community
The combination of gentle physical activity, ocean immersion, and social connection can be deeply restorative.
Do I Need My Own Equipment?
No. All essential equipment is provided. You’ll just need swimwear, a towel, and warm clothes for after your session.
What If I’m Nervous About the Ocean?
That’s completely normal. Many participants feel anxious at first. Facilitators are experienced in supporting people who may feel nervous around water, and you’re encouraged to take part in whatever way feels right for you — even staying on the shoreline is absolutely okay.
