At Surfsmile, we believe the ocean can be a powerful place for healing, connection, and joy. Our mission is simple: to support adult mental wellbeing through surf therapy while providing unpaid carers with much-needed respite, community, and time for themselves. Below you’ll find answers to our most frequently asked questions about what we do, who we help, and how you can get involved.
What is Surfsmile?
Surfsmile is a community interest company based in Croyde, North Devon that offers adult surf therapy sessions designed to support mental health, confidence, and wellbeing. We are proud to offer a free carers surf club, which provides unpaid carers with access to the sea, surf coaching, and a supportive community all at no cost to them.
What is surf therapy?
Surf therapy combines time in the ocean with guided support, gentle coaching, and mindfulness elements. It’s not about becoming a professional surfer, it’s about:
- reducing stress and anxiety
- improving mood and confidence
- reconnecting with nature
- building supportive relationships
The rhythm of the waves, physical movement, and shared experience create a powerful environment for emotional reset and resilience.
Who can join the free carers surf club?
Our carers surf club is for adult unpaid carers — people who regularly support a loved one due to illness, disability, mental health challenges, or age-related needs. Many carers rarely get time for themselves, and this club exists to give them exactly that: space to breathe, move, and be supported.
No surfing experience is needed. Complete beginners are always welcome.
Why focus on unpaid carers?
Unpaid carers are one of the most overlooked groups when it comes to wellbeing support. Caring can be rewarding, but it can also be physically exhausting and emotionally isolating. Surfsmile was created to provide:
- respite from daily responsibilities
- a sense of identity beyond caring
- connection with others who understand
We believe carers deserve care too.
Do I need to be fit or able to swim well?
Not at all. Sessions are adapted to each participant’s comfort and ability level. You don’t need to be sporty, strong, or confident in the water. Our team creates a safe, encouraging environment where you can go at your own pace, even if that means simply standing in the sea and breathing in the fresh coastal air.
Where do sessions take place?
All sessions run in Croyde, North Devon, from the Surf South West Surf School, one of the UK’s most beautiful surfing beaches. The natural setting plays a big role in the experience, wide skies, fresh sea air, and open water all contribute to the calming, restorative effect participants often describe.
What should I bring?
We provide surfboards, wetsuits, and guidance. You just need:
- swimwear
- a towel
- warm clothes for after the session
- an open mind
Many people arrive feeling nervous and leave smiling — hence the name Surfsmile.
Is it really free?
Yes. The carers surf club is completely free for eligible participants. Our wider work, community support, and partnerships help make this possible because we believe financial barriers should never prevent someone from accessing wellbeing support.
What if I’m anxious about joining?
Feeling nervous is completely normal, especially if you’ve never surfed or don’t usually take time for yourself. Our sessions are intentionally welcoming, relaxed, and pressure-free. You’ll be supported every step of the way by understanding facilitators and a friendly group atmosphere.
Most people tell us their biggest worry was showing up — and that it quickly became the best part of their week.
How can I sign up?
You can learn more or register your interest by visiting https://surfsmile.org/pages/contact Spaces can be limited to keep sessions safe and personal, so we recommend getting in touch early.
Can I support Surfsmile?
Yes — and your support makes a real difference. You can help by:
- sharing our mission with others
- recommending us to carers who may benefit
- partnering with us as an organisationEvery contribution helps us offer more sessions and reach more people who need them.
Final Thoughts
